Truth film fest opens for 1st Yolanda anniv

The 3rd Truth Cinema (Sine Totoo) Film Festival opens in Tacloban City, Leyte province as the people of the region commemorates the 1st year anniversary of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) onslaught.

Typhoon Yolanda claimed the lives of more 6,000 people in the Eastern Visayas region. The typhoon made landfall in the region on November 8 and wrought havoc for a few days, downing homes, livelihood, businesses, power and water lines. Victims still seek for sufficient relief and rehabilitation aid nearing the first year after the typhoon.

In January this year, a film screening of the 2nd Truth Cinema in a gathering of Yolanda victims was attended by more than 12,000 people. The same volume of people is expected to gather in the first year commemoration.

The film festival shall also hold screenings for commemorations of other landmark human rights issues in the country. Screenings will be held in Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac for the 10th year commemoration of the Hacienda Luisita massacre, in schools for the 5th year commemoration of the Ampatuan massacre, in Davao region for the 2nd year of the Typhoon Pablo onslaught and many others. The film festival is expected to end on December 10, the International Day of Human Rights.

Truth Cinema is a mobile grassroots film screening program of human rights films that travels to schools, communities and workplaces all over the country, going to where there be a concentration of the people and bringing film out of its traditional and commercial screening space. Truth Cinema aims to show the real dire human rights situation in the country and generate discussion, collaboration and collective action on the issues hounding the human rights situation in society today.
